Individual and couples counselling, in person or online
Counsellor and Psychotherapist in Bishop's Stortford
About me
I’m Karen. I’m a psychotherapist and counsellor, and I’ve worked in mental health for over twenty five years. For nearly twenty of them I’ve had my own private practice, and for around fifteen I’ve been here in Bishop’s Stortford. I offer individual and couples counselling at my practice in the Old Monastery on Windhill, face to face or online on Zoom or WhatsApp.
Something has brought you to this page. Perhaps it’s anxiety that won’t ease, a low mood that has gone on too long, a loss, or a relationship that no longer feels like a partnership.
These can all be signs of feeling disconnected in some way, from your “self” or from your partner.
My job is to help you make sense of what’s going on, so you can move forward with a better understanding of who you are and what you need, for yourself, for your relationship, or both.
I work in an integrative, humanistic way pulling from many different schools of thought.
The most important relationship you have is the one with your “self”. It shapes all your other relationships.

Things people bring to me
These are the things people bring me most often. Each page says a little more about how I work with it.
Couples work
I have a postgraduate diploma in couple therapy, which took two years at the Centre for Gender Psychology in London, and I’ve worked with couples in Bishop’s Stortford for over twelve years. Couples come to me with communication difficulties, a loss of intimacy, an affair, the pressures of being a step-parent or blending families, addiction, or anger. Most are with me for between 12 and 18 weeks. Some stay a lot longer. You can read more on my couples counselling page.
Men and asking for help
I work with a lot of men, and I know that coming to therapy isn’t easy for many of them. Most of the men I’ve worked with grew up believing that real men meet their own needs and don’t ask for help. If that’s you, you’re very welcome here. Asking for help is a courageous step, and it’s often the first time a man has given himself permission to work out what he needs. I’ve written about this in two articles: What are little boys made of? and Angry men.
Working online
If getting to Bishop’s Stortford isn’t possible, or you’d rather stay at home, we can work by video call on Zoom or WhatsApp. I see people in nearby towns like Sawbridgeworth and Stansted Mountfitchet, and clients further afield across the UK. Sessions cost the same as in person. You can read how it works on my online counselling page.
Getting in touch is often the hardest bit
I see clients on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, between 9am and 9pm, and I answer messages outside those times. If I don’t pick up, leave your number and I’ll ring you back.
